Project Gargaar is a youth leadership and empowerment project. “Gargaar”, meaning “base of support” or “safety net” in Somali, is a three-year project designed to build that base of support for refugee youth and help them overcome the deficit in appropriate, effective and engaging youth programming. The project provides eight established SCBOs with the program development expertise, training and technical assistance needed to establish youth programs in their communities. It engages refugee youth, aged 12-19, in the development of programming, helping to support the emergence of a new generation of leaders. A major component of the project is to collect and develop culturally-appropriate youth programming tools – including a collection of best practices in programming for Somali youth – and share them with a network of both Somali and non-Somali service providers, ensuring that the impact of this project will be wider than may be reached via direct technical assistance.
In FY2011, SFCN partnered with the African Refugees Educational and Cultural Services (Columbus, Ohio) and Somali Youth and Family Club (Seattle, WA) to implement the first year of Project Gargaar activities.
